R. Bruce McPherson was a well known Howell businessman, the president of McPherson Bank, and an insurance broker. He had the McPherson Mansion on Michigan Avenue built in 1915. McPherson was the son of William McPherson Jr. and Jennie M. Ranney.

He died May 14, 1855 at Howell, Livingston, Michigan, and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Howell. He was a surveyor and hotel keeper according to the label on his portrait.
Amos was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Wright.
