Howell High School Basketball team, 1912
This image was included in the 1st National Bank Calendar.
This photo is also found in the "Howell Bicentennial History and Photographic Supplement", 1975, p. 431. The caption reads, "The Howell basketball team about 1912, with Gus Schmidt as coach. This picture taken in the old skating rink where they played their home games. The losing team had to sit on the floor."
This article, written by Duane Zemper, noted the old roller skating rink was located "on the spot where Mike Hagman's Gas Station is now, across from McPherson Bank on Michigan Avenue.", p. 428. The address is 202 North Michigan Avenue, Howell, Michigan.
Mr. Zemper also noted that the high school team had no gym to play their games in the old Central School, but when the new school was built in 1921, on South Michigan Avenue, the team played there.

The dam site itself has been altered over the course of the past several decades, likely for safety, but nearby structures are very similar in the photo. Several similar photographs exist that are publicly available showing this site from several angles as well as the nearby structures, and are clearly labeled Hell, MI. -

Kroger Store, First National Bank Calendar Photos, Livingston, Michigan
This photograph was included in First National Bank Calendar Photos. It is a photograph of the Kroger Grocery and Baking Company. Kroger had stores in Fowlerville, Howell and Brighton by 1930. This photograph is likely of the store is Howell as its address before 1930 was 110 N. Michigan, Howell, Michigan. In the photo, the address of 111 is visible.
Later, Krogers relocated to 321 East Grand River, Howell. In December 1930, the Livingston Republican published an article, stating, "Kroger Grocery & Bakery Company vacated the first floor in the Barnes building. Work was commenced immediately to prepare the building to house the modern print shop" of the Livingston County Republican.
Manager in 1929 was Carl Schadel who in 1930 purchased the Paul Brogan grocery. Walter Hagni, later, who had also been in charge of the Michigan Avenue Kroger store was transferred to the Grand River store in Howell.
