    A portrait of Albert Leander Smith, Cashier at First State and Savings Bank from 1903 to 1946. 

    Mr. Smith retained that position until the First State & Savings Bank merged with the First National Bank of Howell on May 15th, 1946.  He retired at that time. 


    Albert L. Smith was born in Howell, Livingston, Michigan 1874, and he died at McPherson Memorial Hospital on October 29, 1954.   He was married to the former Emily Beach; she died in 1943.

    This photo is also found in the "Howell Bicentennial History and Photographic Supplement", 1975, p. 431.   The caption reads, "The Howell basketball team about 1912, with Gus Schmidt as coach.  This picture taken in the old skating rink where they played their home games.  The losing team had to sit on the floor." 

    This article, written  by Duane Zemper, noted the old roller skating rink was located "on the spot where Mike Hagman's Gas Station is now, across from McPherson Bank on Michigan Avenue.", p. 428.  The address is 202 North Michigan Avenue, Howell, Michigan.

    Mr. Zemper also noted that the high school team had no gym to play their games in the old Central School, but when the new school was built in 1921, on South Michigan Avenue, the team played there.

    Robert Freeman Burden was the bulk agent for Standard Oil Company, and the driver of this wagon was Lyle Burden.

    Captioned: "In 1905, a Standard Oil carriage makes early morning deliveries of gas and kerosene to drug stores that sold the fuels to the general public."

    It features R.B. McPherson and his wife in 1902 Murray in a parade. This was most likely the first car in Livingston County.  The car was made in Adrian.
